Studies in Animal Behavior —Distance Education combined with on-campus practical classes The Ethology Institute offers a series of courses in animal behavior, animal learning, and animal behavior modification, which students can combine in various ways. You can take courses one by one or in levels. You can chose to study one, two, or three years. Our programs are designed to suit individual wishes, abilities, and ambitions. Since our programs are designed in levels, you can always continue your studies after successfully completing the previous level. When you sign up with us, you get a student credit chart on your profile, your own personal record chart, where all your course participation, written assignments, and passed tests and exams are registered. All our programs are a combination of distance education and on-campus practical classes. After one year studies and after passing the necessary tests and exams you earn your diploma as: Level 1 After one year, you earn your certificate as CPDT, Certified Professional Dog Trainer (where you work in practice with dogs). Level 2 Half a year later, you will be a CPAT, Certified Professional Animal Trainer (where you work with dogs and two other animal species in practice, e.g., horses and cats. To sign up for the CPDT or CPAT programs, click Signup and choose 'Student (six months or one year)'. Level 3 If you want to upgrade your diploma and continue your studies one more semester after graduating as a CPAT, you will have to write assignments in Ethology and Learning Theory, work in practice with animals of yet a different species, and pass some more practical exams. Successfully completion will confer you a diploma as ACPAT (Advanced Certified Professional Animal Trainer). Level 4 After graduating as an ACPAT, you can study one more year where you take some more theoretical courses, treat problem behavior in animals, gain practice as an animal behavior therapist, and write your final project, your BSc thesis. After successfully defending your thesis and passing a practical exam on animal problem behavior, you earn your diploma as BSc in ABT (Animal Behavior Therapy). Postgraduate If you are a graduate student, you may take the whole course as a post-graduate course, which means that you don't have to write a new thesis, but you will have to provide us with a copy of your original thesis.
Syllabus, textbooks, tests and exams Please see BSc in Animal Behavior Therapy for detailed information about the course work for all programs as well as tests and exams. The first year is common for all programs. The second year is common for ACPAT and BSc students and the third year is only for BSc students.

E-mail program — We recommend Mail (Mac), MS Outlook (Win) or MS Entourage (Mac).
MS Word for Win or Mac or Pages (Mac) — You must have MS Word or Pages and although earlier versions normally work flawlessly, we recommend the latest versions. You cannot use other word processors because your tutor will send you back your assignments reviewed and with comments.
All mentioned Windows programs are included in the MS Office package. Mac users must use Pages 09 or MS Office for Mac 2008 or newer.
All lectures at the Ethology Institute are in English. Students are sometimes worried whether their English is good enough to attend lectures. Our experience shows that after a couple of lectures, all students are up to it, no matter how rusty their English might have been.

The Ethology Institute is an approved education provider by the Association of Companion Animal Behavior Counselors.

Some of our courses and seminars are very specific, e.g. seminars for canine police officers and drug dogs. Other courses are more general in their content such as clicker courses for dog, cat, and horse owners.
In order to be eligible for the final BSc exams, students must have completed high school or an equivalent program. However, the individual courses are open for everyone and can advantageously be taken by persons involved in animal training, welfare, rescue, etc.
After graduation, DE students receive a diploma as all other graduates. There is no difference between DE graduates and on-campus graduates. Although other educational institutions generally give our students credit for their accomplished studies at the Ethology Institute, this occurs at their discretion.
You can mail us at info@ethology.eu for more information about our distance education programs.
